to sandy hook elementary school, carrying a virtual arsenal. investigators say the gunman had hundreds of rounds of ammo with him, perhaps enough to kill every student at sandy hook elementary. the connecticut governor says when the gunman heard police arriving, he used one of those bullets on himself. massacre ending as it began, with violence and blood. we have team fox coverage with rick leventhal on today's first funerals for the victims and updates on the survivors. first, the fox report's chief correspondent jonathan hunt live at the fire house in newtown, connecticut. where does the investigation stand tonight? >> it's moving slowly, john, and it's moving methodically. there are, of course, two main crime scenes. the school itself where those 20 children, ages six and seven, and the six female staff members were all gunned down, so horrifically on friday. that crime scene is likely to remain one, according to the cops, for months to come. it will not be reopened as a school until all of the investigative work is done there, if it reopens as a school at all. the second crime scen

news. we talked every day this week since the tragedy of sandy hook elementary school last friday, talking every day this week about the need to do something about gun control. and not just after sandy hook but sandy hook seems to be the tipping point after so many of the other mass cars because you saw these 6-year-old kids, angels taken away. let's talk about that. yesterday, expressing a little frustration over president obama not being very specific, yesterday, later in the day, we got some good news on several fronts in this effort to respond to the gun violence in this country in an intelligent and across-the across-the-board way. let me tell you about a couple of things that happened. maybe you don't know. one of the big prior to equity firms, serberus said they were going to drop sell, get rid of the freedom group. the freedom group includes bushmaster, incorporated, whatever it is, the people who make the bushmast ter assault rifle. they got a call from the california teachers association which has a huge huge pension program, and they tol

on, getting aid to victims of superstorm sandy. by a 61-33 vote the chamber passed a measure offering $60 billion in help. it heads to the house which must approve the bill by thursday or else the process to consider the money has to start all over again. at least 113 people were killed when superstorm sandy hit in late october. the governors of new york and new jersey, the hardest hit states, have estimated damages at more than $78 billion. >>> and turning to weather. even though winter is just over a week old, millions of americans probably can't wait for spring to arrive. me, as well, yes. scenes like this in maine are playing out all across the country as snow is now on the ground in almost 65% of the lower 48 states. at least everybody's enjoying it together. look at this video from arkansas where -- in little rock, they posted a record-breaking nine inches on christmas day. and for some of you, yay, not over yet. let's bring in meteorologist bonnie schneider for a look at what is on top for today. is there an end in sight for -- >> no. no. we've got more snow, more wind and rain

in the grieve. sandra endo is in newtown for us. what happened, sandy? >> reporter: wolf, saying good-bye to loved ones is becoming a daily routine here in newtown. today, 27-year-old hero teacher victoria soto, carolyn previdi, cheryl lot bacon, daniel barden all were buried today. 26 angels on the hillside, watching a somber journey to a final resting place. ♪ the private pain of saying good-bye. shared by this small new england town. grief knowing no boundaries. 7-year-old daniel barden dreamed of being a firefighter. in ceremonial dress from new york to massachusetts, hundreds of them gave daniel a hero's sendoff. the slow flashing lights come through town too often, leaving heartbroken residents with questions no one can answer. later tonight, a bigger tribute at a neighboring town where residents there and elected officials are hoping to present to newtown an uplifting memorial to remember the lives lost. wolf? >> sandra endo, thanks very much. >>> with the renewed discussion of gun control in the aftermath of the shootings, there's another push among gun owners. cnn's steven

. and you just have been really busy during sandy. you responded to sandy and you rally have been helping the folks on long island out it near and dear to your heart. they all are, but this is really near and dear to your heart. >> i did grow up in long island. and it was amazing to see the storm surge and the wind that struck long island. we were literally just opening up roads for a week and a half, which is a long time, just to create access to communities. so the storm there was very powerful. we were able to clear roads and help ambulances get to people's homes and get people in need to the hospitals. we were able to power up critical buildings and do a lot more obviously. and it is just amazing to see such a powerful storm hit such a highly populated area. we don't usually see something like that happen. >> no, i've seen -- i saw the same thing when i was right in the middle of katrina. i understand exactly what you're talking about. it is something to see and behold but also the human spirit during those things is something to see as well. because people really start helping people
